Connecticut Cannabis Possession Limits

Adults 21+ can carry 1.5 ounces in public and store up to 5 ounces in a locked container at home. Connecticut also has an equivalency formula for concentrates and edibles, and purchase limits that have been raised twice since launch.

Public Possession Limits (Adults 21+)

Under SB 1201 (RERACA), adults 21 and older may carry the following amounts on their person or in a public place:

Product Type Limit
Flower (dried cannabis) 1.5 ounces (42.5 grams)
Concentrates (wax, shatter, oil) 7.5 grams
THC-infused products (edibles, tinctures) 750mg total THC

Home and Vehicle Storage

Connecticut allows a higher storage limit for cannabis kept at home or in a vehicle, provided it is in a locked container:

Location Home or vehicle
Limit 5 ounces (in a locked container)
Requirement Must be stored in a locked container — a locked safe, lockbox, or the locked glove compartment/trunk of a vehicle

The 5-ounce home limit applies to the total amount regardless of product type. The locked container requirement is strictly enforced — cannabis left in an unlocked drawer or on a countertop technically exceeds the public carry limit if over 1.5 ounces.

The Equivalency Formula

Connecticut uses a defined equivalency formula so that possession limits apply consistently across product types:

1 ounce of flower equals… Amount
Concentrate (wax, shatter, oil) 5 grams
THC in edibles/tinctures 500mg THC

This means 1.5 ounces of flower is equivalent to 7.5 grams of concentrate or 750mg of THC in edible products for purposes of the public carry limit.

Purchase Limits Per Transaction

Connecticut sets a per-transaction purchase limit separate from the possession limit. This limit has been raised twice since sales launched:

Period Per-Transaction Limit
January 2023 (launch) ¼ ounce
Mid-2023 increase ½ ounce
Current (2026) 1 ounce

The gradual increase from ¼ ounce to 1 ounce per transaction reflects DCP's cautious approach to market scaling. There is no daily or weekly purchase cap — only the per-transaction and total possession limits apply.

Transaction vs. Possession

You can buy 1 ounce per transaction in 2026, but you can carry up to 1.5 ounces in public and store 5 ounces at home. The transaction limit controls what you buy at once; the possession limit controls what you can have.

Medical Patient Limits

Registered medical marijuana patients receive significantly higher limits:

Monthly purchase 5 ounces per month
On-person possession 5 ounces
Home grow 3 mature + 3 immature (since October 2021)

Gifting Rules

Adults 21+ may give cannabis to other adults (family or friends) within the possession limits, provided no compensation of any kind is exchanged. HB 5329 tightened gifting enforcement — violations carry a $1,000 fine per offense. Any exchange of money, goods, or services transforms a legal gift into unlicensed distribution.
